Seminars

InclusiveU seminars are open to all InclusiveU affiliated students including OnCampus, interns, Campus Mentors, Peer2Peer Partners, and matriculated SU students. Seminars are offered once per week and you are encouraged to attend as many different ones as possible.

Spring seminars begin the week of January 22 unless otherwise noted, and the last week of seminars will be April 15:

Spring 2024 Seminar Options

Financial Literary: In this seminar, students will meet with a member of Broadview Federal Credit Union’s Financial Well-Being Team to learn about money management and will create goals for the financial future. We want students to learn the basics of money management, and have fun doing it! Students will participate in multiple interactive exercises to learn about the importance of budgeting, saving, spending, what to do with their paychecks, and more. Facilitated by Josh Jones and Broadview FCU, Tuesdays 10-10:50am. Location TBD.

Positive Choices: This seminar helps inform and give students confidence with their choices. This is a required seminar for students during their time at InclusiveU. Over the course of the semester, you will talk about healthy relationships, boundaries, consent and sexual health. All of these topics will help you with your own personal goals as well as making positive choices. Mentor support is encouraged for this seminar. Facilitated by the CAPP team from ACR Health, Tuesdays 11-11:50am or Wednesdays 10am-10:50am. Location TBD.

NEW! Personal Training: Develop your skills and knowledge of SU’s weight training and cardio equipment alongside Personal Trainers at the Barnes Center. Facilitated by Barnes Center fitness staff and Sam Roux. Tuesday 4-5PM at Barnes Center. This seminar is capped at 12 students. Seminar Starts Jan 30.

Health Advocacy: Do you ever feel overwhelmed about your health or going to see a doctor? Have you ever wondered why we need to exercise or eat healthy foods? Are you curious about how to live a healthy life? Join us in Health Advocacy to answer these questions and more as we explore a variety of topics in health, wellness, and medicine. This seminar will help you gain the skills to manage your personal health. Facilitated by Upstate Medical University students, Wednesdays, 1-1:50pm. Location TBD.

Creative Writing WorkshopCalling all creators! This creative writing seminar is a space for writing, without the pressure of grades and academic essays. Come join your SU peers to write, create, produce and share our stories together through song writing, poetry, short stories, memoir writing, comic strip making, and more! This is a space where you can express yourself through many formats, challenge yourself through writing, and to have fun sharing your stories! Facilitated by Julianne Strauss, Wednesday 330-420PM. Community Service (where I live): Explore the definition of community service, identify various forms in the Syracuse community, and develop an action plan to assist what a group needs and support their need. During the seminar, students will problem solve, determine personal strengths, and communicate with an agency. This will allow each student to connect with a local agency as desired by personal goals and interest level. We encourage you to come with your peer partner to this seminar! Facilitated by Michele Krak. Fridays 10-1050AM. Location TBD.

Current Events: Are you interested in what’s going on in the world? Do you want to be up to date on what’s happening in the news? Then come to the Current Events seminar! In this seminar we will talk about events as they happen in the real world. We can talk about events going on globally (all over the world), nationally (what’s happening in the United States), and locally (like new events going on in Syracuse, or other things happening in our community). All political views are welcome! We welcome open debate on issues- the main rule we have is that we have to respect each other’s opinions, even if we disagree with them. Facilitated by Jon Rohald, Fridays, 11-11:50am. Location TBD.

Let’s Talk Sports: Do you like sports of all kinds? Football, basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, curling, tennis, all of the sports! Join me at this sports seminar to talk about the week’s happenings in the sports world. We’ll watch highlights from the week, talk about any news and make predictions for the upcoming week! Facilitated by Sam Roux, Fridays, 1pm-1:50pm. Location TBD.

Friendship First Aid: We often work hard and focus on the physical side of our bodies (we know how to use a bandage when we get a cut) but sometimes it is harder to work our mind – our emotions and behaviors. In this seminar, we will look at communication skills and talk about all sorts of relationship issues such as setting boundaries, supporting one another while making sure to focus on ourselves, and having open, honest, and appropriate communication. Facilitated by Jon Rohald on Saturday 230-330PM. Location TBD.

(For residential students only) Life Hack: Living on campus can be fun, but it comes with responsibilities. For some of us, this is our first time with roommates, chores, and schedules. Together let’s explore these opportunities and challenges to learn for one another. Maybe you can help your friends learn something you already know. Facilitated by Bridget Fowler, Tuesday 4-5PM or Wednesday 4-5PM in residence halls room TBD.
