A weekly events calendar is emailed out to the group.<\/p>\n<p>We are looking for students who want to support their peers with intellectual and developmental disabilities in becoming more active in the campus community, and InclusiveU\u00a0students who are willing to teach as well as learn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/syracuseuniversity.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_0kQVvM6QX7kbR7U\"><strong>Apply to be a Peer<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Want to be a Peer this semester? Read below for details.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4431 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/taishoffcenter.syr.edu\/inclusiveu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/quad-small-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"students on the quad\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/taishoffcenter.syr.edu\/inclusiveu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/quad-small-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/taishoffcenter.syr.edu\/inclusiveu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/quad-small-rotated.jpeg 443w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>How does it work?<\/h3>\n<p>Peer Partners can work together in a number of ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Social interaction<\/em>, hanging out on or off campus.<\/li>\n<li><em>Accessing the campus<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 using the libraries, fitness center, coffee shops, student centers.<\/li>\n<li><em>Participating in organized activities,<\/em>\u00a0club meetings, and events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Most partnerships are 1 to 1, but we also have \u201cevent\u201d partners who are trained in Peer2Peer philosophy but aren\u2019t able to\u00a0commit to a full time partnership.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Do I have to know anything special?<br \/>\nDo I need to have a background in disability?<\/h3>\n<p>Have you ever\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Held a door or helped someone carry something?<\/li>\n<li>Tried to make someone feel welcome?<\/li>\n<li>Shown someone how to do something they have never done before, like use a cell phone, make a pizza, play a game, etc.?<\/li>\n<li>Given someone directions to your house, to a classroom?<\/li>\n<li>Talked to someone who communicates differently than you do, like someone who speaks another language?<\/li>\n<li>Helped a friend with a school assignment or on the job?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then, you have provided natural supports to include or to assist someone. Most of the time, this is what your peer will need.\u00a0If partners\u00a0need to know something special to\u00a0support each other (like, using a\u00a0communication device, iPad, or a\u00a0mobility device), they may need\u00a0some advice or instructions. Peer2Peer\u00a0staff will help you learn anything\u00a0special you need to know.<\/p>\n<h3>Peer partners are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Agreed upon \u2013 no one is forced to participate<\/li>\n<li>Learners \u2013 ready to help each other and talk to each other<\/li>\n<li>Individuals \u2013 everyone has different needs and preferences<\/li>\n<li>Reliable<\/li>\n<li>Working together\u00a0and encouraging each other\u2019s growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>All students<\/strong> must attend a \u201cP2P Info Session\u201d to apply for a peer partner.\u00a0 These sessions will explain the commitment and expectations of having a peer partner.
