Members of InclusiveU’s OnCampus program have once again had the opportunity to spend time at the Warehouse with Professor Stephen Mahan, working through the PAL Project to create self portraits. The project gives our students the experience of taking photos, writing and digitally editing, all to create a reflection of who they are through their pieces.
This year’s reception, held in December in the Link Gallery of the Warehouse, was a time for students to read their pieces to friends, family and staffers and also to celebrate the students’ progress in the program.
The Photography and Literacy Project (PAL Project) is an innovative program positioned under Syracuse University’s Coalition of Museum and Art Centers (CMAC), that brings SU students into Syracuse City Schools to develop projects involving photography, video, audio recording and writing. The objective is to improve student’s writing and reading skills by linking these studies with photography, video and poetry. Using “Visual Thinking Strategies,” PAL Project also improves student’s critical thinking and media literacy skills. PAL Project provides students with an opportunity for expression through both a visual and narrative connection by linking the forms of digital media and writing.
InclusiveU at Syracuse University provides an opportunity for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to attend college. OnCampus, part of InclusiveU, is a partnership between the Syracuse City School District and Syracuse University’s School of Education that brings SCSD students who have developmental disabilities to the campus for academic, personal, and social development.
